. unfortunately for mitt romney, presidential politics is like football, a game with a clock, one with just five weeks of ticks remaining. in football, a team behind by lots of points late in the game must take gambles. romney is behind in the important swing states with the national electorate regarding who would best handle health care. on wednesday night it might be risky for romney not to take risks, but what can he do? he might add to his policies by embracing, say, breaking up the largest banks, the sound policy that would subvert the -- but not good venues for explaining anything, actually. but especially not new initiatives. and october is a time for summations to the jury, not new submissions of evidence. you agree? >> i agree with that completely. i think the idea of romney going out there and saying let's break up the big banks, i think it would not help him. i think his -- apart from what howard and john have said, i think his challenge is he's got to deal with this 47% problem. he's got to somehow walk back from that and convince people he actually cares about all of america. that's

by two. new hampshire, leads by seven points. romney launched his presidential campaign there and has a summer home there. we will see. we have three more polls, state polls and big three next week before the debate, a national poll coming out, but you see the environment. one other interesting note on polling, if you average the nine states together in the various leads, almost looks identical to the national polls. five and a half point lead for the president, 49, 44 with rounding, which of course is where all the national polls sit around five points for the president. romney starts his morning in a state that hasn't been able to put into play, pennsylvania. he will speak to veterans at valley forge military academy in a philadelphia suburb. only public event of the day. he will be fund-raising in philadelphia, probably the motivation why he is in philly. slew of national polls show how damaging romney's remark on the 47% has been to his campaign. the most recent national polls trails the president by 5 to 8 points. instead of punching a national message, romney seems to be making

presidential poles out of ohio show president obama with a strong lead over mitt romney. it has been a hotly contested battle in the buckeye state. mitt romney took a three-day bus tour through ohio this week while president obama held two campaign events on wednesday. joining me is joe barden. political reporter for the columbus dispatch. he interviewed mitt romney this week. joe, with a welcome to you. as we look at the poll numbers, president obama now has a ten point lead at least according to one poll after being neck in neck with mitt romney for quite a while. what's changed? >> right. well, thanks for having me, alex. the first thing that's changed, at least in terms of the ten point poll you're talking about, is the 47%. as we all know, two weeks ago it was revealed, some comments that mitt romney said at a private fund-raiser about 47% of americans and the quinnipiac new york sometimes cps nebs news pos revealed after that. that's the 10% margin. as you've mentioned all morning, there is a trend in all polls that shows the president pulling away from romney, and that's for two reaso

a -- is a great orator and has a benit of having participated in presidential debates whereas mitt romney has not had that opportunity. it's incumbent on both of them to get their message out. but the key for governor romney is go out there and be respectful and be strong and make sure that the truth gets out there. he's going to get out there and show he has a choice. we have a choice between a president with a record who promotes government dependency as opposed to romney who will help upward mobility for this country. that's a choice the american people want to make and they will make an informed choice based on the facts getting out there. >> you don't think it helped mitt romney had the primary to go through going up against your former bosses in those debates? >> those are certainly helpful. but when you have obviously more than one person you're going against, it's rather difficult. but the good thing as we saw in '08, what he was good with the mccain/obama debates, he let them go face to face. i expect to see that wednesday night. that's good. get the two of them in there debating the

. it's insane. these are two pretty good debaters. governor romney has not done a high pressured one on one debate. and i think for all the talk of the fact that he may have done more presidential debates of anyone in american history not having high pressure one on one makes a difference. he's practicing and rob portman is a stand-in but my guess is if i was going to give the edge the president because between his debates with then senator clinton and debates against john mccain he's not going to have that hard swallow moment when he's out there dealing with the pressure. >> this was john kerry earlier in the program talking about the expectations you don't like at all. mark. >> this is the biggest deal in the world to him so he's been really getting ready for it and as we know from my experience with president bush, that debate can mean a lot. i went up eight to ten points after that debate. so mitt romney has a lot more going for him here. >> so, of course you worked with john kerry on his debate prep. can any of the big issues -- i was talking to rachel maddow earlier about afgha

believe in that larger idea of the narrative, what should the narrative be for romney tonight and should it be let's take this one great idea, pound it home as many times as you can or hope something sticks? >> no, the former. look, american presidential elections are usually decided on which candidate the public at large feels has the best vision of the future. our presidential elections are generally speaking, not about the past, but about the future. that's number one. so, in case of the narrative. number two, that we know that in politics as in so much else in life, after these debates are over, there will be a lot of people who can tell you specifically what any candidate said, but they will know how that candidate made them feel. so, the object and target for both candidates in the debates is for people to walk away feeling the person who handled it best. certainly people they want specifics, so governor romney, he needs to tell how with some detail his administration will be different from not just the obama administration, but from the president bush. with president obama, his ch
